Korea economic structure is currently undergoing a paradigm shift toward a knowledge-based digital economy characterized by networks and a globalized
economy. In this digital economy, industrial structure can be strengthened by the digitization of industries and the industrialization of digital information.
Rapid development of information technology (IT) can accelerate revolutionary changes in industrial relationships and management systems, and hence enhance the efficiency of both manufacturing and service industries. Korea has several industrial sectors that have retained world top-class positions. It is number one in shipbuilding and DRAM fabrication. It ranks 4th in the chemical and fabric industries. However, manufacturing. Measures are urgently needed to enhance the industrial competitiveness of Korea. Otherwise, it is possible that most of the Korean industrial base will be squeezed out between the newly developing countries, including China, and advanced industrial nations such as Japan.
